Tuborg Beer Packaging

This is a response to a brief set by YCN. You had to create a brand awareness for Tuborg Beer promoting their strapline “LIVE UNLEASHED”.

My idea was a limited edition white beer bottle that you can scribble/draw on that is available at major festivals around the world. People are able to record their memories or things about that particular festival and at the end of the festival they can take it home and keep it as a souvenir. If that particular bottle becomes personnel to a individual they keep it thus reducing waste.

A Poster about A Poster

This design is a response to a University set brief on my first day back , was asked to illustrate the purpose of a poster. My poster design is illustrating that posters should be visually stimulating even though the subject matter is not yet apparent hence the random triangles and squares. I used them to create to create a vibrant pattern which catch the views attention because poster only have a short amount of time to communicate

Innovate Consolidate : Clever Little Mouse

Clever Little Mouse

This was a University set brief when in groups your meant to create a solution for a problem that exists.  In my group we decided to create a solution that helps out ICT Professionals in dealing with stress by equally distributing the work amount.

Our Final outcome was a System called “Clever Little Mouse” which will help in controlling stress. Below is how it works.

Clever Little™ Mouse is one of our stress measuring peripherals for use with the Clever Little™ System. It can measure 3 different indicators of stress of the user.

TEMPERATUREWhen a person gets stressed, they go into “Fight or Flight”, this means that the blood moves from their extremities to their torso and central organs. As a result the temperature of their extremities (such as their hands) will reduce. The lower the temperature of their hands the more under pressure a person is.

FORCESomeone under pressure is more likely to move erratically and use more force in their inputs. By measuring the force of their movements and button presses on the mouse, the higher the force, the more under pressure the user is.

GRIPThe more pressure applied by the users grip, the more under pressure they are.

Mouse Design

My main role in the project was to design the actual mouse below are the developments I went through.

I started of by researching the different sensory areas on our hands so  can design a mouse that will maximise the contact area of the palm.

After that I done some rough sketches of different mouse designs that we might potentially use.

Everyone in the group decided and they liked the last sketch.

The next step was to make the sketches into vector line drawings in Illustrator then transfer them into Cinema 4D so I can make it 3D.

I used Cinema 4D to create an actual 3D model of the mouse to see how it would look and everyone was pleased with the outcome. Lucky enough at my University I found out they have a Rapid Processing machine that allows you to make 3D models of anything from Cinema 4D. Even though the mouse itself won’t be working its good to have something that will show what it could look like is produced.

The images above is what comes out of the Rapid Processing machine an actual 3D model from the Cinema 4D rendering. As this was my first attempt I messed up the ratio settings in the program so it came out smaller then it should be.

I finally got the mouse correctly scaled and it came out better than I thought considering this was my first time using this method.

I also designed full editorial pieces below.

Text, Sequence & Interaction : Beginning, Middle and End

Beginning: Stage 1

Aristotle proposed that drama should be thought of in terms of three acts. Plays, he suggested, consist of a beginning, a middle and an end. Using string, produce a visual representation that suggests a beginning, a middle and an end. Your 3d string experimentation should be translated into print, but can be to any scale, or format, that you feel appropriate. When considering size however think about standard paper sizes and what is economically and environmentally sustainable.

You may use the string provided or use different types or quantity of string

For this part of the Project I have to illustrate a beginning, middle and a end with a piece string. The way I show the story/narrative can be in any form as long as it has these three elements and made from string.

The Book is about a young man called Kunta Kinte who was ipped away from his village of Juffare in Gambia and bought as a slave to Annapollios, Maryland United States.I Have Seen the Movie Adaptation of the original book by Alex Haley. As the story goes on and Kunta Kinte starts a family each generation it seems they have lost thier Roots from africa and are more westernised and integrated in the american lifestyle. Customs and traditions that Kunta Kinte had since he was in africa are filtered out from generation to generation. In some way i could relate to this story because Im the first generation of my family to have grown up in United Kingdom and I have lost some of my roots even though my dad does try keep certain customs going.

My Chosen Story

Design Objectives

My goal is to use string to show how I identity and traditions are lost through a period of time. The end result will need to clearly show a beginning middle and a end and they should be easily identifailble.

Becasue my idea is to show the lost of culture, heritage and identity over a period of time the first idea that came into my head was to make a time line. First of all I started to rap the string around a piece of mountboard then i thought wht if I made the gaps bettween each strand of string bigger and bigger to show the integration of the western civilastion to Kunta Kintes family.Image on the right hand side is the very first thing I made with my string. The concept is very simple as the string unwinds more it shows black card = the loss of identity. This design is nowhere near finished looking at it because the main objective is to show a beginning middle and a end and so far its unclear. I’ll have to think of a way I can make obvious that there is ment to be three separate sections on the same piece of mount board.

The image above is the continuation from the first string object I created. I made another time line this time i separated the three different acts so its  more visible that it has a beginning , middle and a end. Even though it is much clear that there is three acts i preferred it when it was a single bar then being apart like that Each of the pieces can be easily lost. Being a single bar represents Kunta Kintes Family in america they all lived on the same plantation farm and the next generation grew up on it.

With this experimentation I was just looking at another shape other than the single bar Idea. In all fairness I do not like this shape it looks awkward and not balanced like the bar. i also had problems wrapping the string around it so i had to make it section by section. From making this shape I got the idea of closely making the three sections the same lentgh but the gaps will be bigger. On the single plank it will show that there is three different sections beginning, middle and a end.

Final Development

This is my final 3D object which illustrates the story of “Roots” on a single plank of mount board. You can see the gaps getting bigger and bigger reinforcing the idea of lost identity. The best thing I like about this plank is that it can be read in different terms for example just looking at it I could say its also showing the gradual integration of slaves in american society after is emancipation in 1865. Part of the project requires the 3D object has be to be transferred to print for my design its easy I can either scan it in our take photographs. I dont want to do anything more to it because I want the message to speak clearly and be easy for the end user to read. If they don’t get the design I would have failed this part of the project.

I toke various photographs of my timeline and i was not happy with the way it looked even though the photographs are decent my message and idea have been lost. The loss of identity overtime is not that visible as when the plank was scanned in and flat. I also like the colouring in the plank thats laid flat it looks distressed and worn out over a period of time. I did anticipate that I will have difficulties in photographing my final outcome but im pleased I gave it a go and tried something different. My favourite photo out the ones I toke is the 2nd one on the bottom row  I like how the aperture has focused on a particular part of the plank and blurred the rest making it the focual point.

This is the final print image for my stage one.  I choose to use a sans serif typeace rather than a serif becasue it looks more formal and sutle the serif typeface i looked at was to blocky and ominate and toke the attention away from the final piece itself. I also Placed the text away from the image to give it some distance so they don’t clash.

Bournemouth Students Porn Movie (Prank) – Final Postcard Design

The two images are the front and back of my final postcard design. On the back of the postcard it has the a paragraph that shortley explains the news article so people know it was a prank and nothing happened. Before the colour was blueish So I Changed it to resemble the colour of skin adding to the connotation of nudity in a subliminal way. The colour also makes it look like it was taken at the back of a alley in the red light district of London Soho. What I also like about it is the lighting and shadow on the wall facing away from the stencil creating a perspective. The only edits I have done to the photograph is the colour and cropped it part from that its original since it was taken. I could have sharpened the image and got rid of the graininess but it really goes well with the whole theme of being in a back alley.

Bournemouth Students Porn Movie (Prank) – Postcard Part.1

This was a University set brief in collaboration with Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand. We had to typographically design a postcard on a news article that happened in Bournemouth. The headline had to be designed so it shows the topic, the event and location. Because the Postcard will be seen by University students in my age group I have to choose a story that will engage with them. Its a good thing the main viewer is going to be students because I think students are more open to anything rather than a 40 year old or a Child.

Above is the news article i choose.
News article source

The main reason why I picked this particular article is that the end user/viewer will be students and they probaly would find it amusing that University students would do such a thing when they should be studying for their degree.

Design Objectives

My Objectives are to design a postcard that is clear and easy to read. I will not go for the obvious choice and use sexual connotations becasue I think the headline is strong enough to stand by itself. The word “Porn” needs no explanation everyone knows what it isso i will not concentrate on this idea. The main thing i will need to work on is how to communicate the headline in a effective manner that supports that supports it.

Idea 1

Main headline is in bold with a one colum grid structure. Put the word “student” in red to try take some attention off the word porn.

Idea 2

Typographically I wanted the postcard to resemble movie posters so I used a bold tall sans serif typeface for the headline. I stylised the word “porn” becasue if i down playing it to much might make it look insignificant. I used a different typeface for porn to add depth to the postcard and a contrast between the two different typefaces.

Idea 3

Made the word porn smaller to down play it. Making it smaller between the larger letters makes it look seedy and underground. I like the tallnes of the whole image like its on the side of a building or something.

Idea 4

With this idea i totally flipped reversed it and made the word PORN the main word. I did this so it draws the viewer in first then they read the smaller black lines and understand it was just a prank.

Final Design Development

Out of all the designs i did I liked number 1 the most becasue of the two different typefaces used. I was happy with the text layout and how it looked on the page. Becasue the original story was projected on to a building I had the idea of projecting my postcard design on to a surface so it links back to the article. it also adds another dimension to the postcard not just making a flat print out from InDesign.

Laser Cut stencil for projection.

The images above are the first ones i tried out with a torch shinning through the stencil i made. The images with the brick wall in the background where not suitable becaue the wall is a “image”. I liked the other ones but they did not look like they were projected on to a surface so I had to take more photographs.

The reason why these images are different in colour with the first is that i used a LED light rather than a standard bulb wich gave it the blueish tint. With these images I thought about how I would photograph the stencil to show that its being projected. I prefer the ones that show the corner of the room becasue it illustrates two surfaces meeting and people know that its a projection rather than a edit in photoshop our a stick placed on the wall. It also adds a perspective.

The Image Above is the one that I chose to use for my final postcard. I like it becasue a bit of the stencil is is projected on one side of the wall and the rest is on wall facing the viewer. The corner of the wall relative to the stencil reinforces depth lets the viewer know its really being projected on to a wall.
