Universal Republic Portfolio

I received a package containing some of the work I have created for Universal. This is the first time seeing them actually printed and its so sick being able to see your own work right infront of you rather than on the screen :D. Also got a bunch of free CD’s from them. Kevin Rudolf of Cash Money records signed his album for me NICEEEEE!!

More projects to come!

Jessie J – “Who You Are” Release Posters

I was more than excited to work on this project more than any other one because it was for an emerging star Jessie J. I was briefed to design a double sided poster and postcards for her album release on 12th April (USA). I was briefed on 7th of March and they wanted designs the next following day because of the time different it gets pretty hectic handling my University work plus freelancing on the side as well luckily enough I have figured out a way of working that I get both things done in time.

Below is the copy I had to include on the two different posters.

LOGOS: Lava Records / Universal Republic

I didn’t really have any restrictions on this brief but on one side of the poster it has to concentrate on her lips. I also got sent a file of different pictures they want me to work with and see which one works best.

Poster Side A

Above are various ideas I came up with for Side A. I concentrated on then album cover as the main focal point to grab the attention of the viewer looking at it. In total for Side A I sent Universal about 10 different variations to choose from so they have a wide variety. They chose the one in the top right hand corner to choose as Side A, Its the most one that is balanced well the oversized image and the block sans serif typeface used work well.

Below Is the final for Side A that they picked.

Poster Side B

For Side B they asked me to concentrate on the different lip images they sent me of Jessie J including the same copy text they sent me for Side A.

For Side A I placed the various lips around a central image. I could have manipulated the different images of the lips together but I didn’t want to loose the detail within each lip. I also sent them about 10 different variations to look through after that they told me they wanted to scrap the idea of using the lips (ARRRRGGGGH!!). They sent me new pictures to work with and they wanted the different comps the next following day. I remember i didn’t have any sleep that night because I had to hand in my Draft essay for my dissertation ( HARD TIMES ) that day aswell.

These posters are the new ones I had to design. Because the poster is going to be double sided with side b printed on one side , I designed Side A so that it looks different to Side B. Side A looks more lighter and not as dark as Side B. From the different comps I sent them they liked two of them instead of one you can see them below.

Side A Final’s

These are the two final posters they choose after some alterations of the text and layout. My favourite one has to be the first one because of the Jessie J logo I redesigned to give it that “glass look”. It works really well with the full bleed image and text placed on the fotter of the poster.

Close up of the glass logo design.

When Im working with posters and text I have released that they both have to connect and compliment each other so it looks like one uniformed piece of work rather than two different items and also get the message across.

Jessie J Artwork – Universal Republic Records

I was really excited with this project because Jessie J is an up and coming artist from my Home town London. I was asked to produce a drawing of Jessie J’s face and CD sampler artwork.

For the drawings of Jessie J’s face I asked the help of one of my classmates Josh Harker becasue I knew he has strong drawing skills which will be perfect for this. Universal Republic wanted the drawing to be nebulous and focus on the sleek precision of her bob haircut. Josh Harker drew two images that perfectly illustrate these two points that Universal republic wanted to convey.  Below are the illustrations drawn by Josh Harker .

More of Josh Harkers work can be viewed at

The next part of the project was to design CD sampler artwork. They gave me three different images of her and asked me combine two of them the one with paint all over her and the clean studio shoot. Below are the various outcomes I came up with.

Above are the CD sampler artwork i created blending in the two different images. The reason why I chose to use green and pink is that they contrast very well against the black and white images. When i sent over the Images to Universal republic they really liked the Illustrations drawn by Josh Harker and the CD sampler artwork. They choose the last image of the above to be the final design and asked to remove the image of her with paint all over it and edit the paint splatter in her hair and eye. Below is the final cd sampler artwork after the changes.

Enrique Iglesias – Poster Designs

Following the POP designs i did for Kevin Rudolf Universal Republic asked me to design POP for Enrique Iglesias for his fourth coming album “Euphoria”.  This project toke about 2 weeks to complete with constant communication between me and Universal Republic bay far it was the most work intensive project I have ever done , not getting to sleep until 3 in the morning I would roughly say there was 100-150 revisions/developments i did to meet there needs. I have learnt a great deal more in this project than the other projects I have done for them.

Below are the final design which will be printed according to the release date.

Kevin Rudolf “To The Sky” – Designs

Universal Republic asked me to design more POP for another one of their artist “Kevin Rudolf” The brief was simple and they said to create different designs that are in the same fashion/style as the previous posters I did for Lil Jon.  I  Initally created 13 different designs and they picked 6 for me to alter. I decided to arrange the type so its clear and visible. I didn’t want to create anything messy our busy because they wanted the information to be clear and easily readable. Universal Republic Supplied me with images to use for posters, stickers, postcards and snipes. I was also given literature to put on the Posters.

Working for Universal Republic has allowed me to practise working to deadlines on a professional level. I have also learnt how to manage myself better to produce work quickly when its asked.

Below are the  final designs that Universal Republic picked to use for Kevin Rudolf.

Poster Designs – Lil Jon “Crunk Rock”

I had previously designed a image for Lil Jon who is an American rapper/producer back in 2008 which can be viewed here. Two years later they asked me to design promotional items for his up coming Album “Crunk Rock” and I was more than happy to design them. Because it was a big task and they wanted mock up’s in a day I asked my classmate Jon Cleave who is also a Graphic Designer to collaborate with me on this project as I feel that he has strong ideas and is committed to a task you can view his blog here. ( )

The best thing I liked about this project is that I got to design for a artist that Im a fan of which made me more involved and wanted to do well. They provided me and Jon with images to work with so we can design the items and so on. This was the first time I worked professionally with somebody on a project outside of University and it was good practise.

Below are the following items that got approved by Lil Jon to be used to promote ” Crunk Rock” which can be bought on iTunes and all you good record stores
